In “SKAUT,” choreographer Hallgrim Hansegård and his co-creating dancers explore the layered meanings of freedom and femininity through the language of movement. How does clothing—its presence or absence—shape our sense of liberation? What makes certain gestures ‘feminine’ or ‘masculine,’ and what remains of traditional gender roles when a stage is filled solely by women?
“SKAUT” reimagines these questions through the artistry of five remarkable female dancers. In Norway and beyond, the division of clothing and labor has long underscored societal expectations around gender. As traditional Norwegian head coverings, like the “skaut,” gradually disappeared, new symbols, such as the hijab, emerged to continue a complex dialogue around femininity, identity, and control. Hansegård delves into these intersections, reflecting on the significance of head coverings and the diverse histories of the female body—examining both the cultural constraints and the personal power they evoke.
With hair both bound and unbound, the dancers of “SKAUT” embody a fierce, modern aesthetic that fuses contemporary expression with the raw, untamed energy of Norwegian folk dance. The work is further elevated by an evocative original score, nominated for the Norwegian Grammys, and an award-winning lighting design that earned the Norwegian Light Prize in 2021. Together, these elements create a visceral experience, where tradition and innovation meet to challenge outdated notions and celebrate the autonomy of women on their own terms.
Premiering 28th February 2020 in Bærum kulturhus.
